INTERNATIONAL FIREFIGHTER'S DAY
Today we celebrate International Firefighter's Day in honor of all Firefighters who lost their lives and who risk their lives not only to save ours but also our property. This day of observance started on January 4, 1999. An email proposal was sent out when five firefighters lost their lives in a tragic incident in Victoria, Australia.
Why May 4th? May 4th in linked to St. Florian-the first known Commander Firefighter of a fire squad in the Roman Empire. St Florian was known as a protector of those in a dangerous fire. He along with his colleagues lost their lives in the service and protection provided by Firefighters today.
